Island Lake Rec Area

One of the recreational areas in Livingston County is the State of Michigan’s Island Lake Rec Area.  This beautiful park is a 4,000-acre park.  It offer an “up north” experience within an hour of most areas in Livingston and Washtenaw Counties.  The terrain is a mixture of open brush land to mature hardwood forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in.

One thing you must see is a sunset over Trout Lake.  Take the short walk across the open lawn to the hidden stairway that winds down to an overlook.  The sunset view from here is absolutely stunning.

Island Lake has 18 miles of trails, paved and unpaved.  The camping facilities range from group cabins to rustic tent camping.  There are two lakes – one with complete facilities, including a snack bar – the other is a more hidden treasure that you will have to hike to.

There is even a trail that leads to Green Oak Village Place mall (if you want to escape back to suburbia) though you would never guess you are that close to population when you are in this park!
